WIN! Austria’s Burgenland changes procurement for more organic, less meat

Interesting news coming out from our campaigners in Austria. The state of Burgenland was targeted by Greenpeace Austria earlier this year, along with eight other governorates, two change procurement policies to source more healthy, organic food and reduce meat portions.

This month, the regional parliament voted to revamp public food procurement which will include the following:

  • A mandatory increase of quota of organic food in all public canteens of the federal state (also includes hospitals, magistrates etc.) with the goal of 50% organic by 2021
  • Deliberate reduction of meat portions per serving to mitigate the increased cost of organic food
  • A plan to reduce food waste and buy more seasonable fruit and vegetables

Perhaps Burgenland’s new policy can help pressure other states across Austria to provide healthier food to its citizens while reducing the impacts of industrial meat production. Demand less and better meat!
