Greenpeace Philippines #DietforClimate project scored a win for the climate and the community during the recent World Meat-Free Week celebration as government officials from different cities and provinces around the Philippines made pronouncements of support for plant-based meals in local schools.
In the province of Iloilo, an event organized by the #IamHampasLupa Youth Campaigners engaged students, teachers, and local farmers in cooking demonstrations for plant-based meals.
This prompted Mayor John Tarrosa of Zarraga Municipality, who was in attendance, to suggest to the school principal the inclusion of plant-based dishes in the meals for the local high school.
In the province of Camarines Sur, meanwhile, #IAmHampasLupa Youth campaigners were able to engage with an Iriga City Councilor, who was also the chairperson of the local committee on health. The official pledged to follow through on proposed ordinances that will make plant-based meals available in schools and government offices.
With the support of these officials, it may be sooner rather than later before healthier, more environmentally responsible options are introduced in the country’s schools.
